If you think about the lessons and stories in Scripture, they are really quite abbreviated, a "just the facts, ma'am" sort of version of the events.  For me, Scripture really comes alive when I can imagine the real-live people present, their emotions, the details of the situation - the humanity of those events. 

A powerful gateway into the the heart of Scripture is through the eyes of Mary.  Imagine her thoughts as a parent:  the wonder of watching this child grow into manhood........then miracles occur........then the accusations..........then the brutal, unjust death..........then, resurrection!   This glimpse into the life of Christ through the eyes of his mother gives us fresh perspective and new insights into our Saviour. 

 

"Blessing" as a Verb!

Many of us are comfortable with the word "blessing" as a noun, such as,   "My wife is a blessing to the world."  

However, "blessing" can also be a verb to denote action on YOUR part.  It's perfectly acceptable (and encouraged) to ask God to confer divine favor/protection/grace upon a person, place, or thing.

Spiritual Motherhood

We introduce the concept of "spiritual motherhood" in this week's episode.  A 2007 document from the Congregation for the Clergy in Rome, addressed to all Bishops stated:

The vocation to be a spiritual mother for priests is largely unknown, scarcely understood and, consequently, rarely lived, notwithstanding its fundamental importance. It is a vocation that is frequently hidden, invisible to the naked eye, but meant to transmit spiritual life.

Where's the Peace?

In the first (and likely last) Two Edge Talk reference to the TV series Seinfeld:  character Frank Costanza was once counseled to utter the phrase "Serenity now" as a means of controlling his blood pressure in times of stress or frustration.  Watching the red-faced actor bellow the term at the top of his lungs was quite effective in comically demonstrating the utter futility of demanding peace in our lives.  Peace is not dispensed from a kiosk at the mall.

Deacon Tim and Cyndi discuss how you might quietly invite peace into your life in this episode.  Reflect upon their tips, and you just may find more peace in your soul, even when the world around you is anything but peaceful.

In this episode, Deacon Tim and Cyndi talk about Christian obedience.  Deacon Tim makes the point that if we minimize ourselves, and maximize God, our faith can sometimes open itself up to levels we previously could not have imagined possible. A Workout Program for the Will

You never hear anyone speak of "temperance" any longer, yet it's still on the books as one of the Four Cardinal Virtues recognized by the Catholic Church as the foundation of Christian morality.  Basically, it's the virtue of self-control in the face of the things that pleasure the senses.  Unfortunately, temperance now seems repressive, stifling to spontaneity, and just plain uncool.  Deacon Tim contends that God still thinks temperance is cool, and so should we!  In this podcast, we talk about how it really is "cardinal" to the spiritual life.

A Salute to Mothers!

What a great conversation with Deacon Tim for this week's podcast!  I took a break from all the wiping that accompanies motherhood (countertops, my children's body parts, etc.) and sat down to tape our interview about motherhood, and I left feeling positively renewed!  Deacon Tim somehow managed to make all the day's wiping seem like a noble calling.
