You never hear anyone speak of "temperance" any longer, yet it's still on the books as one of the Four Cardinal Virtues recognized by the Catholic Church as the foundation of Christian morality. Basically, it's the virtue of self-control in the face of the things that pleasure the senses. Unfortunately, temperance now seems repressive, stifling to spontaneity, and just plain uncool. Deacon Tim contends that God still thinks temperance is cool, and so should we! In this podcast, we talk about how it really is "cardinal" to the spiritual life.

I have a phrase locked into my head, which I heard many years ago, that reminds me not to follow the world's standards: The ruts of routine are the grooves of God's grace. The slippery slope analogy is real, not cliche. There is great power (which comes from the cross) in saying NO in temptation. And staying vigilant...yes! Taking that first step away into temptation is so benign, seemingly healthy (with the veneer that I am stronger than my issue, be that sex, alcohol, food, drugs, money...) but it really does lead to slavery. It is God's grace that keeps me temperent And I must cling to it, and remember how weak I really am and almost pride myself in that weakness so I joyfully say NO to sin and YES to God's grace. Thanks you guys and Good Morning!

I remember seeing the movie "Chocolat", which is all about a woman who opens a chocolate shop in the middle of Lent in a Catholic town, and how she transforms the town with her supposedly "magic" chocolate. It's main message was that Lenten fasting is bad. It made me think...no wonder we have so many overweight people in this world, if we can't even give up chocolate for 6 weeks without the world thinking it's a terrible thing. And no wonder the kids don't do Lenten fasting any more. It's just not cool.
