I tend to look at the sacraments with skepticism. I think I don't fully understand this teaching. I see faith given to the object and not God. I understand we humans need and have things that remind us of His power/grace/greatness. But we also tend to rely on those things more than Him. I believe Jesus addressed this with the Pharisees - trusting in methods and their own righteousness/what they wear/eat etc. and not being humble and reliant on God. So I, honestly, am a bit troubled. Yet I see your faith, know it's real and it is full on Him and so therefore trust you but need, I think, to understand more/better. Thanks for putting up with me!

Barb- It's always good to remember that Jesus was a Pharisee. That aside may I ask you a question....is the denomination you belong to, not typical of Christians... meaning does your place of worship not feature a cross?

While I do not subscribe to Catholic teachings.....And while I can see how an outsider might feel that Catholics and Jews, faiths rich in traditions might place our faith in symbols and practices rather than The Almighty One. It simply is not true...anymore than placing a sticky note on your front door reminding you to pick up bread quells your hunger more than the meal for which the bread is intended.

While it is not possible to prove the negative....... and I am not going to undertake the futile discussion that would evolve from trying to do so. I want to be very clear, my faith is in The One Who Created Me...and the manner in which I dress, the food that I prepare for my table, the manner in which I keep the Sabbath...is all a result of the reverence I feel for The Almighty One...and not for a moment should you confuse one with the other.

Hmmm, I didn't know Jesus was a Pharisee. Where does that come from? I'm in a Presbyterian church and yes we do have a cross in our sanctuary. We look to the wooden form for strength and reminders but don't believe their is actual power in it. And I think that's what I'm hearing from the podcast. Perhaps it's my limited worldview that only trusts in what I can see/feel. I know people who wear crosses of various types as statements for others or reminders to themselves. I guess my concern is with people I know who do place a higher value on these sacraments, believing if they wear them/hang them/show them, they are saved/protected/holy.

As I understand sacramentals...they are much like the fringe worn by Orthodox Jews, or the crosses worn by those you know. They impart grace, through the manner they serve as a constant reminder of The Almighty One. On the doorposts of the entrances to my home, and to the bedrooms in my home are mesusahs....cases that contain scrolls of bilble verse. Each time my husband, our children, Jewish guests or myself enter our home....or upon entering our bedrooms at night we touch the mesusah and recite the verse quietly to ourselves. The mesusah imparts grace by acting as a reminder us of the exhortaion to keep the Covenant principles, the essence of the Convenant Principles (Listen, Israel: the L-ORD is our G-d, the L-rd is One! You must love the L-rd your G-d with your whole mind, your whole soul, and all your stength.", the exhortation to teach the Convenant principles, the exhortation to worship The Almighty One exclusively, the exhortation to Obey The Almighty One Exclusively, and the Exhortation to remember the past. Think of it this way....having a cellphone does not keep a child safe...it does however act as an instrument to connect the child with his/her parent and to keep the family connected. With three children in college at spots far flung from home base, their cellphones do contain a higher value in providing a degreee of safety, and in keeping our family connected. That's how I view the mesusahs....It is a constant reminder to "phone Home" and to follow the rules the ALmighty One has set for us.

I believe it is fairly widely accepted that Jesus was a pharisee. His train of thought is certainly within the school of believes. He certainly shared their opposition to divorce, honor in poverty, and while much of what Christians view as his opposition to Pharisees is actually contained within the Pharasee internal dialouge. Pharasees sought him out to ask questions...this is typical of the Pharisees practive of engaging in pharaisaic debate. Christians have given Pharisees a bum rap....the name has become synonoumous with hypocrite...which is clearly unfair at best, and anti-semetic at worst.
